I've been reading Jaron Lanier this holiday - "You are not a gadget". It's a refreshing antidote to the kool-aid drinking blogospheric zombies that seem to occupy some of the more famous digital agencies. Much of what he says can be brought to bear on solving some of the more interesting challenges of either developing brands from scratch, or more commonly, using digital media to piggyback on the multi-billion dollar expenditures in conventional media that are our legacy. We often stand on the shoulders of giants and would do well to remember it more often.
One of the consequences of enjoying Lanier is coming back to earth with a bump. I found myself feeling somewhat jaded about the current direction of the ongoing digital revolution and how we're becoming locked-in by poor quality strategic thinking and the blind pursuit of superficial ideas. Not everything new is shiny, and for that matter not everything that is shiny is good. That said, this video gave me hope and made me feel excited again. Ready to do battle with the zombie hordes.
